Babu Sassi, a fearless young man from southern India ,
is the cult hero of Dubai 's army of construction workers.
Known as the "Indian on the top of the world",
Babu is the crane operator at the world's tallest building,
the 819-meter Burj Dubai. His office, the cramped crane
cab perched on top of the Burj, is also his home. It takes
too long to come down to the ground each day to make it
worthwhile - although, when the building is completed,
its elevators will be the world's fastest. Stories about his
daily dalliance with death are discussed in revered terms
byDubai's workers. Some say he has been up there for
more than a year, others whisper that he's paid 30,000
dirhams ($8,168) a month compared with the average
wage of 800 dirhams a month. But everyone agrees, he's
worth it - because nobody else would have the courage to
do the job!

Moments

There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London which
used to have gallows adjacent. Prisoners were taken to
thegallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hung. The
horsedrawn dray, carting the prisoner was accompanied
by anarmed guard, who would stop the dray outside the
pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''One Last Drink.''
If he said ''Yes,'' it was referred to as "One For The Road.''
If he declined, that prisoner was "On The Wagon"


So, there you go. More bleeding history.


They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used
to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold
to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were
"Piss Poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk
who couldn't even afford to buy a pot they "Didn't have a
pot to Piss in" and were the lowest of the low.


The next time you are washing your hands and complain
because the water temperature isn't just how you like it,
think about how things used to be.


Here are some facts about the 1500s:


Most people got married in June because they took their
yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by
June. However, since they were starting to smell,brides
carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence
the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting
married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man
of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then
all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the
children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so
dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the
saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!"


Houses had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no
wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get
warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs)
lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and
sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.
Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.
This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and
other droppings could mess up your nice cleanbed. Hence,
a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded
some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other
than dirt. Hence the saying, "Dirt Poor." The wealthy had
slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet,
so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their
footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh
until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping
outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.
Hence: a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big
kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit
the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly
vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat
the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold
overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes
stew had food in it that had been there forquite a while.
Hence the rhyme: ''Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold,
peas porridge in the pot nine days old''.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel
quite special. When visitors came over, they would hangup
their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man
could "Bring home the Bacon." They would cut off alittle to
share with guests and would all sit around talking and
''Chew the fat''.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with
high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto
thefood, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened
most often with tomatoesp; so, for the next 400 years, or
so,tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the
burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and
guests got the top, or ''The Upper Crust''. Lead cups
were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination
would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple
of days. Someone walking along the road would take
them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were
laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and
the family would gather around and eat and drink and
wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom
of ''Holding a Wake''.


England is old and small, and the local folks started
running out of places to bury people. So they would
dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-
house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these
coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch
marks on the inside and they realized they had been
burying people alive. So they would tie a string on
the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and
up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone
would haveto sit out in the graveyard all night (the
graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone
could be, ''Saved by the Bell'' or was considered a
''Dead Ringer''And that's the truth....


Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !

The Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat
down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight.
'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a
short nap,' I thought.


Just before take off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle
and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I
decided to start a conversation.


'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated
nearest to me.


'Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special
training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan .'


After flying for about an hour, an announcement was
made that sack lunches were available for five dollars.
It would be several hours before we reached the east,
and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time....


As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his
buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a
lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be
worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base.'

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying
lunch so I walked to the back of the plane and handed the
flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all those
soldiers.'' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly.
Her eyes wet with tears; she thanked me. 'My son was a
soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him.'


Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the
soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked,
'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?'


'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned
and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later
with a dinner plate from firstclass.


'This is yours, thanks.'


After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the
plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. 'I
saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.'
He handed me twenty-five dollars.


Soon after I returned to my seat. I saw the Flight Captain
coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he
walked. I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he
was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane.
When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his
hand and said, 'I want to shake your hand.'


Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the
Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a
soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought
me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I
was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of
the passengers.


Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch
my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of
me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left
another twenty-five dollars in my palm.


When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to
deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man
who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned,
and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-
five dollars!


Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for
their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed
them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to
reach the base.. It will be about time for a sandwich. God
Bless You.'


Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect
of their fellow travelers.


As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for
their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for
our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It
seemed so little...


A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote
a blank check made payable to 'The United States of
America ' for an amount of ' up to and including my life.'


That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this
country who no longer understand it.



'May God give you the strength and courage to pass this

Mermaid or Whale?

Mermaid or Whale?
Recently, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman
appeared in the window of a nationally marketed gym. It
said, "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics
did not match those of the woman on the poster,
responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.



To Whom It May Concern,

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea
lions, curious humans.) They have an active sex life, get
pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a
wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with
shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful
places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea, and the coral reefs
of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and even have
recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually
have no predators other than humans. They are loved,
protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist.
If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices
of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish
or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men
who get close to them, not to mention how could they have
sex? Just look at them ... where is, well, 'IT?' Therefore,
they don't have kids either. Not to mention, who wants to
get close to a girl who smells like a fish processing factory?

The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea
that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an
ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes
me shiver, and a piece of chocolate with my friends. With time,
we gain weight because we accumulate so much information
and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it
distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy,
we are enormously cultured, educated and happy! Beginning
today, when I look at my back side in the mirror I will think,
"Good grief, look how smart I am!"

Story of Daniel

An Anonymous Story called "Daniel's Gloves"
(Author Unknown... or is it? Please, read on.)


I sat with two friends in the picture window
of a quaint restaurant just off the corner of
the town square. The food and the company
were both especially good that day.

As we talked, my attention was drawn outside,
across the street. There, walking into town,
was a man who appeared to be carrying all his
worldly goods on his back. He was carrying a
well-worn sign that read, 'I will work for food.'
My heart sank.

I brought him to the attention of my friends and
noticed that others around us had stopped eating
to focus on him. Heads moved in a mixture of
sadness and disbelief.

We continued eating but the man's image lingered
in my mind. We finished our meal and went our
separate ways. I had errands to do and quickly set
out to accomplish them. I glanced toward the town
square, looking somewhat half-heartedly for the
strange visitor. I was fearful, knowing that seeing
him again would call for some response. I drove
through town and saw nothing of him. I made
some purchases at a store and got back in my car.

Deep within me, the Spirit of God kept speaking
to me: "Don't go back to the office until you've at
least driven once more around the square..."

With some hesitancy I headed back into town.
As I turned the square's third corner, I saw him.
He was standing on the steps of the store-front
church, going through his sack.

I stopped and looked... feeling both compelled
to speak to him, yet wanting to drive on. The
empty parking space on the corner seemed to
be a sign from God: an invitation to park. I
pulled in, got out and approached the town's
newest visitor.

"Looking for the pastor?" I asked....

"Not really," he replied, "just resting."

"Have you eaten today?"

"Oh, I ate something early this morning."

"Would you like to have lunch with me?"

"Do you have some work I could do for you?"

"No work," I replied "I commute here to
work from the city, but I would like to
take you to lunch."

"Sure," he replied with a smile.

As he began to gather his things, I asked some
surface questions. "Where you headed?"

"St. Louis"

"Where you from?"

"Oh, all over; mostly Florida ...."

"How long you been walking?"

"Fourteen years," came the reply.

I knew I had met someone unusual. We sat
across from each other in the same restaurant
I had left earlier. His face was weathered
slightly beyond his 38 years. His eyes were
dark yet clear, and he spoke with an eloquence
and articulation that was startling. He removed
his jacket to reveal a bright red T-shirt that
said, 'Jesus is The Never Ending Story.'

Then Daniel's story began to unfold... He had seen
rough times early in life. He'd made some wrong
choices and reaped the consequences... Fourteen
years earlier, while backpacking across the country,
he had stopped on the beach in Daytona. He tried
to hire on with some men who were putting up a
large tent and some equipment.. A concert, he
thought.

He was hired, but the tent would not house
a concert but revival services, and in those
services he saw life more clearly... He gave
his life over to God.

"Nothing's been the same since," he said, "I
felt the Lord telling me to keep walking and
so I did, some 14 years now."

"Ever think of stopping?" I asked.

"Oh, once in a while, when it seems to get the
best of me. But God has given me this calling.
I give out Bibles. That's what's in my sack... I
work to buy food and Bibles, and I give them
out when His Spirit leads.."

I sat amazed. My homeless friend was not
homeless... He was on a mission and lived
this way by choice. The question burned
inside for a moment and then I asked:
"What's it like?"

"What?"

"To walk into a town carrying all your things
on your back and to show your sign?"

"Oh, it was humiliating at first. People would
stare and make comments. Once someone
tossed a piece of half-eaten bread and made
a gesture that certainly didn't make me feel
welcome. But then it became humbling to
realize that God was using me to touch lives
and change people's concepts of other folks
like me."

My concept was changing, too. We finished
our dessert and gathered his things. Just
outside the door, he paused. He turned to
me and said, 'Come Ye blessed of my Father
and inherit the kingdom I've prepared for
you... For when I was hungry you gave me
food, when I was thirsty you gave me drink,
a stranger and you took me in.'


I felt as if we were on holy ground. "Could
you use another Bible?" I asked.

He said he preferred a certain translation. It
traveled well and was not too heavy. It was
also his personal favorite. "I've read through
it 14 times," he said.

"I'm not sure we've got one of those, but
let's stop by our church and see." I was
able to find my new friend a Bible that
would do well, and he seemed very grateful.

"Where are you headed from here?" I asked.

"Well, I found this little map on the back
of this amusement park coupon."

"Are you hoping to hire on there for a while?"

"No, I just figure I should go there. I figure
someone under that star right there needs
a Bible, so that's where I'm going next."

He smiled, and the warmth of his spirit radiated
the sincerity of his mission. I drove him back to
the town square where we'd met two hours
earlier and, as we drove, it started raining. We
parked and unloaded his things.

"Would you sign my autograph book?" he asked.
"I like to keep messages from folks I meet."

I wrote in his little book that his commitment
to his calling had touched my life. I encouraged
him to stay strong. And I left him with a verse
of scripture from Jeremiah, "I know the plans I
have for you, declared the Lord, plans to prosper
you and not to harm you; plans to give you a
future and a hope."

"Thanks, man," he said. "I know we just met
and we're really just strangers, but I love you."

"I know," I said, "I love you, too."

"The Lord is good!"

"Yes, He is.. How long has it been since
someone hugged you?" I asked.

"A long time," he replied.

And so on the busy street corner in the drizzling
rain, my new friend and I embraced, and I felt
deep inside that I had been changed. He put his
things on his back, smiled his winning smile and
said, "See you in the New Jerusalem."

"I'll be there!" was my reply.

He began his journey again. He headed away
with his sign dangling from his bedroll, and a
pack of Bibles. He stopped, turned and said,
"When you see something that makes you
think of me, will you pray for me?"

"You bet," I shouted back, "God bless."

"God bless."

And that was the last I saw of him.

Late that evening as I left my office, the
wind blew strong. The cold front had settled
hard upon the town. I bundled up and hurried
to my car. As I sat back and reached for the
emergency brake, I saw them..... a pair of well-
worn brown work gloves neatly laid over the
length of the handle. I picked them up and
thought of my friend and wondered if his hands
would stay warm that night without them.

Then I remembered his words: "If you see
something that makes you think of me, will
you pray for me?"

Today his gloves lie on my desk in my office.
They help me to see the world and its people
in a new way, and they help me remember
those two hours with my unique friend and
to pray for his ministry. "See you in the New
Jerusalem," he had said. Yes, Daniel, I know
I will...

"I shall pass this way but once. Therefore,
any good that I can do or any kindness that
I can show, let me do it now, for I shall not
pass this way again."

Breakfast at McDonald's

This is a good story and is true, please read
it all the way through until the end!


I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently
completed my college degree. The last class I had to take
was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with
the qualities that I wish every human being had been
graced with. Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.'
The class was asked to go out and smile at three people
and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone
and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece
of cake, literally.

Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband,
youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp
March morning. It was just our way of sharing special
playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting
to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us
began to back away, and then even my husband did. I
did not move an inch... an> overwhelming feeling of panic
welled up inside me as I turned to see why they had
moved.

As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell,
and there standing behind me were two poor homeless
men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to
me, he was 'smiling'

His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as
he searched for acceptance..... He said, 'Good day' as he
counted the few coins he had been clutching.. The second
man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend.
I realized the second man was mentally challenged and
the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation.

I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young
lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said,
'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford.
(If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they
had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm).

Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost
reached out and embraced the little man with the blue
eyes.That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were
set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the
young lady behind the counter to give me two more
breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around
the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a
resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand
on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand.

He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said,
'Thank> you.'

I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do
this for you. God is here working through me to give you
hope.' I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband
and son...

When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, 'That
is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope..' We
held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that
only because of the Grace that we had been given were we
able to give.

We are not church goers, but we are believers. That day
showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love.

I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this
story in hand. I turned in 'my project' and the instructor
read it. Then she looked up at me and said, 'Can I share
this?' I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class.

She began to read and that is when I knew that we as
human beings and being part of God share this need to
heal people and to be healed. In my own way I had
touched the people at McDonald's, my son, the instructor,
and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night
I spent as a college student.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever
learn: Unconditional Acceptance.

person who may read this and learn how to

The Lone Ranger and Tonto




The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert.
After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says,
'Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?'
'The Lone Ranger replies, 'I see millions of stars.'
'What that tell you?' asked Tonto.




The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says,
'Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of
galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically,
it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to
be approximately a quarter past three in the morning.
Theologically, the Lord is all - powerful and we are small
and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have
a beautiful day tomorrow. What's it tell you, Tonto?'
